Video — Nathan Brindle / Masterchef The Professionals

In 2012 good mate of mine - Nathan Brindle - asked me to make him an audition tape for ‘Masterchef The Professionals’. We’d been skating together a bunch at the point and he had a solo show at my gallery kind of — gallery. I knew he’d been cheffing at a super fancy restaurant and at the time was moving into a head chef role at a small restaurant just outside of Sydney City. I’d never tasted his food, so I said I’d do it for a meal - I mean - I think I said that, it feels like something I’d say and I remember eating at the restaurant.
*the food was great!

Nathan is a real character, I always said that I wanted to be like him when I grew up (even though I’m nearly 15 years older than him). If he says he’ll do something, he’ll do it, a real salt of the earth kind of bloke. He also had a ute, so he helped me move house about 4 times, he’s a good good man.

Making the video was pretty fun, it has a little Blair Witch look to it because it’s all handheld camera footage but it kind of works. We had to get creative with the voice over filming it with a different device, roped around Brindles neck in a quiet place, very DIY. It’s an awesome little time capsule of what Nathan’s life was like at the time, he’s now got a wife and daughter and is head chef at one of Australia’s top top top restaurants - ‘Ester’. He’s also doing something called ‘Calzonezone’ which is like a pizza pop-up with a BDSM edge to it - he’s definitely a character and I love him.
