Photography — Footwear
Over the past 10 years I’ve taken a lot of editorial style product photographs, mostly of shoes, being that my store - U.P.S. Skate Shop sold a LOT of shoes. Since moving to the US, I’ve been shooting more and more footwear and apparel with Overload. I really enjoy this sort of work because I’m also a shoe collector or '“Sneakerhead” as the kids say.
My personal collection sits at around 120 pairs, give or take, depending what day of the week it is. It’s made up of mostly skate shoes with a bit lifestyle New Balance, Jordan, Nike Air Max, adidas Originals and some fancy ‘adult’ shoes from APC, Human Recreational Services, Padmore & Barnes and Clarks. Yes, I am one of those people with shoes in boxes that I’ll never wear - I do pull them out occasionally to look at them though.
I thought I’d share a few of my favourite photos that I’ve taken throughout my career thus far. As well as using natural light (for the most part), I really get a kick out of using the are around the stores as the backgrounds. In my head, it gives a sense of familiarity of the local area plus it becomes a part of the social media branding. People have recognised the area where the photos had been taken, they also would see me going in and out of the stores with bags of product or laying in the gutter trying to get that perfect angle. In a sense they become a part of the story after they’ve spotted me, “Oh there’s that photo! I saw the guy taking that!”, I would hear stories like that frequently. It always worked out great at U.P.S. and it’s starting to happen at Overload too. Only difference with the Overload crowd, is now I stand out more with my Australian accent.
